About the event

“I don’t have any ideas. I’m not someone who is good at improv. I’m too afraid to try. I don’t want to look like an idiot. I ‘m too boring and bland. I’m not witty or funny. I wish I could but I’m not brave enough. “

There are a plethora of negative associations that can come up around the thought of taking an improvisation workshop. Public humiliation is the number one fear that strikes at our hearts. Unlike the show “Whose Line Is It Anyway” therapeutic improv is not about performing, being witty, or “good enough.” This form of improv stems from the modality of drama therapy, which utilizes theatre arts and drama to create healing for individuals and communities.

Therapeutic improv is for everyone. You cannot do it wrong.

Therapeutic improv is a gentle approach to developing self confidence and improving interpersonal communication. When you attend this workshop you will be invited into a community atmosphere where the potential to create deeper connection with others will be fostered. You will be invited into personal inquiry that will help you to identity, explore and challenge limiting beliefs that can keep you stuck.

What To Expect:

During the first hour your connection to others in the group will be facilitated through drama games that spark inquiry around interpersonal communication. These games are light hearted, fun, and easy to engage in. Laughing, letting go of tension, and releasing mental chatter are often the outcome. After each activity your group leader will foster verbal sharing between members to discuss what thoughts and feelings the games may have provoked, so that deeper trust can be developed with one another.

The second hour of class will be devoted to a writing prompt that will further facilitate group intimacy and letting go of the social mask. Members will be given the space to share their writings with one another through the improvisation of a monologue for the group. This is a moment in which you can take the risk of being seen, heard, and known on a more authentic level. Often group members feel a sense of being deeply understood and valued when presenting their monologues. Your group leader will curate a space that is emotionally safe and inviting to do so.
